Could a page please be added with instructions on how to install the latest version to replace a previous one? I got an error when I tried to run it. I think I might not have done a clean install and will try again making sure I uninstalled all versions.
Unfortunately at the moment I can confirm that the latest build does not work under Windows if your system doesn’t support D3D 12.
As for a clean install, make sure you don’t forget the files in %appdata%/locallow/grandroids
Oh dear! Which o/s are you using? Windows? You should just be able to copy it anywhere on your hard drive and run Phantasia.exe. It’s supposed to delete all the data files if it needs to, but I put the latest build out in such a hurry that I may have forgotten to turn that on!
On Windows, the data files are in C:Users\<username>\AppData\LocalLow\Grandroids\Phantasia\States, and you can delete everything in that folder.
If you want to check which version of DirectX you have, go to a command prompt and type DXDIAG. It’s supposed to run fine on DX11 as well as DX12, but @FoggyGoofball had a problem with it, so maybe it doesn’t. It’s hard for me to tell, because I only have one computer to try it on.
The DirectX installer can be found here, but on Windows 11 it’s installed by default, I think. (Windows 10 goes out of support in a few weeks, so now might be a good time to upgrade! 😉
Other than that, what error message do you see? If it’s an error message within the game itself, then deleting the data files will probably fix it.
I want to make it auto-update eventually, but it’s a big task and I haven’t got there yet. I should definitely post some guidance, though. I’ll put it on my list.
i rename the folder to avoid those problems and to have acces to the older builds if i want to look back
@steve @syphatechno I honestly thought that it was the D3D version that was stopping me from booting the game, but I managed to get updated to version 11 and I’m still not able to boot on my laptop. Previously the software would not open at all and didn’t throw any errors, but now I get an image of a bolly and a red exclamation mark, very odd.
I can’t seem to find an error log anywhere however. What kind of error messages, if any, are you getting?
i uploaded the wrong image and for some reason wordfence is blocking me from editing the post.
@foggygoofball Luckily I am God, so I’ve deleted the file for you (although I liked that one much better!)
There should be two logfiles in the folder above the /States folder. I think, anyway – trying to find where Unity puts files is a black art. I have Player.log and (my own) gamelog.txt in there. But perhaps the program never got that far? It certainly looks like it didn’t even finish loading the game engine.
Um… Corrupted download, maybe? What should happen is a “Made with Unity” full screen logo, then an embarassingly long black period, then straight into a login screen with a pretty girl tending to a baby dragon. That’s the point at which my own code is loaded and running, but it seems like it doesn’t get that far?
@steve correct, it works as it should on my more modern desktop PC and my steam deck, but my laptop is a finicky beast. I’ll try and download it again and if I still have problems I’ll run some directory monitoring Software and find out if it does write a proper log file somewhere.
found the crash logs! I suspect it’s a problem with my system, as right at the beginning of the file when it’s enumerating my system it says that I have d3d 12 installed and I’m certain that i got an error when I updated and could only install 11.
Hmmm, I’ll have to look into this. I never use this machine for games, and it’s always seemed a little funny. I guess i’m going to go crawl some other forums and try to figure it out.
Technology is just wonderful, isn’t it?
edit: crash reports are stored in C:\Users\**yourusername**\AppData\Local\Temp\Grandroids\Phantasia\Crashes
now might be a good time to upgrade!
it will never a good time to “upgrade” to windows 11 to be frank castle with you
I reinstalled and can run the game now!
Sorry for the late response. I’ve been busy this week and wasn’t on my PC much.
@kurgan Yeah, if I am ever forced to downgrade to windows 11 I’ll just install Linux on my main box & keep windows 10 on a separate computer for when I’m still forced to use windows for something.
