Hey, long-time fan of Steve's work. I recently regained a years-dormant fixation on the subject of AI, despite the best efforts of contemporary examples (LLMs etc.) to make it unlikable and boring. I blame the funny turtle streamer.

So, I spent the last couple of months processing a lot of information. Reading up on the theory behind current LLM stuff, a lot of Wikipedia, whatever science papers I can find related to my own thoughts/observations, like non-linguistic forms of intelligence, the brain being a physical machine that changes structure, concepts like brainwaves applied to AI (LinOSS seems interesting).

And, of course, I've been reading blog posts and comments from Phantasia (and Steve's old WordPress, etc.).

Something I'm not fully clear on (and hoping it isn't rude to ask!) is whether some of the outside ideas/research address Steve's past criticisms about the shallowness of mainstream AI research, whether certain ideas overlap, etc.

Like "world models", for example. The premise of modeling and predicting the states of the physical world seems similar to the premise Phantasian brains, but I don't think they're the same.

I also figured it's time that I join some communities with people who actually know/talk about the subject of AI in some way, instead of burdening a couple Discord contacts with my entire stream of consciousness, random scientific papers, and excerpts from my cluttered notes.

Obligatory mention: I sometimes do YouTube. I've struggled to actually be productive for many reasons (I've rewritten this post several times) but I'd be happy to contribute on the "content creator" front if people have ideas.

I did avoid naming evolution or genetics themed videogames even though these inspired a lot of people too. The genres I made here are just provisional and you could change which games go where or make different names. Perhaps someone else knows more or can make another iteration of this, a shared spreadsheet or wiki maybe? Also I possibly made mistakes I didnt play each game and Im not a researcher that knows all those terms. Maybe someone even just wants to talk about a-life here.

Classic A-Life-Software:
- Conway's Game of Life
- Tierra
- Polyworld
- Avida
- Framsticks
- Aevol
- SmoothLife
- Lenia
- alien (Artificial Life Environment)
- soup of life (soupof.life)
- Gridworld (steam game)

Cognitive A-Life "Games":
- Creatures series
- Uagi-Saba series
- Wobbledogs
- Grandroids/Phantasia

Neural Programming:
- Crescent Loom
- soul interface

AI Agent Games:
- Galapagos
- Black & White series

Genetic Algorithm Experiments:
- SodaRace
- Evolution (itch game)

Evolution Sims:
- SimLife
- Darwin Pond
- Gene Pool
- Species ALRE
- Vilmonic
- More Seeds
- Critterding series
- Creatura
- Neuraquarium
- Thrive
- Ecosystem
- The Sapling
- The Bibites
- Evosim
- Planetary Life

Digital Pets:
- El-Fish
- Fin-Fin
- Petz series
- Seaman

Life Sims:
- Little Computer People
- The Sims

//Edit: theres mistakes but i will make a new version

How long have you been breeding ducks? What kind of controls do you keep in place to monitor breeding?

How do you rear the young? Or are you going complete natural, just imprinting them with home and hoping for the best?

Also, do you keep any charts or records regarding the rats?

I'm all about research, and I'm hoping to benefit from the experience of others, I've got lots of learning that I've done but basically zero experience and I want to compile a series of useful guides for myself to reference in three months or so in order to temper my ADHD and keep me focused on what matters.

Generally, I binge learn and then get distracted by new projects, but I really want to stick with this one in the most methodical way I can.

Any other user's input would be greatly appreciated as well, doesn't matter what species you've bred, I am just want to learn general best practices.

Does anyone here have any experience weith such matters? I've been wrapped up in other personal projects for a while, but my wife is a HUGE Jerry Springer fan.

She recently found out that towards the end of his career, he was giving out personalised christmas wishes to some lucky fans. I would completely blow her mind if i could figure out how to make her one.

I feel like i might be out of time, I'm certain i could figure it out given a month but I don't have that kind of time to learn it all from zero. I've got several other gifts i'm working on from software to 3d printed designs to hardware hacks for a variety of devices, so any help (even just a nudge in the direction of an appropriate model or two from huggingface) would be amazing!

I know that there are decent models out there for adding lip-sync to a static image, and likewise there are models for cloning voices. There must be something slightly more advanced that i could use locally, offline without paying ridiculous amounts of money.

If not, there's always her birthday or next year.

Thanks in advance and happy solstice celebrations of your choice!

I've been very frustrated with how movement currently works, though. I don't like that I can't rotate in a complete circle and I don't like that there's no option to hide the walking stick and clipboard. I understand immersion was the idea, but I feel ease of movement took a hit for it. I haven't played as much as I would like lately because I've been so frustrated with these things.

had a dream about a possible ecosystem and wanted to write it down. Since creatures and most game ecosystems have a few flaws. In c1 the ecosystem was always statit and only made things extinct. In c3 it tried to be an exosystem but things always gone extinct to quick. Some critters i found only in the sprite files, because they where as fast extinct. And c2 was in the middle....

Bit an ecosystem should feel alife and the creatures should be the cornerstone.

Therefore once we get one (waaaay down the line) a cornerstone species should trive and multiply once the bollys/norns are around (eq mosqitos sucking blood or plants spreading when eaten). The next wave on criters should increase their numbers according to the previous (birds eating the mosquitos or bees polinating the plants) and so on. This would make the ecosystem explode once the bollys/norns choose that habitat. Optimising performence and feeling of a world. And downregulate once they leave that ecosystem for an other one.

Each species should habe a hard coded upper limit number of individuals (learned that the hard way in creatures by not making that) as well as a lower limit (spawning a new one every 5-20 minutes "wandering" in from a neighbouring field oitside of the game)

Oh and a random thougt that also crossed my mind, a way to dig. A big earth wall compleatly filling oit a premade hole in the ground. Labeled as "door" for the creatures and emmiting "home smell" from it's center. Around 10-50 activations need to be made to "dig down" into that area. Allowing to create their own shelter, removing the "door" earth wall layers one by one. And if not used for 2-20 hours, earth wall slowly "colapses" (refills) the layers there.
